You might be using AI wrong


AI Is Your Nerdy Genius in the Back Room

You know the person in every crime show who sits in a dark room surrounded by screens?

The main characters arrive with a blurry photograph, half a number plate and no useful plan. The resident genius taps a keyboard for six seconds and somehow finds the suspect in a warehouse near the docks.

Complete television nonsense, obviously.

But the basic idea is sound.

Most people now have access to something like that person.

AI can act as your researcher, technical adviser, analyst, tutor, organiser and mildly overconfident nerd in the back room.

The mistake is using it only like Google.

Stop Asking Only for Answers

Search engines help you find information.

AI can help you do something with it.

That means the better question is not:

“What does this mean?”

It is:

“What am I trying to achieve, and how can you help me get there?”

You might want to:

  • start a small business

  • investigate a family mystery

  • build a website

  • understand a technical problem

  • organise your finances

  • learn a new subject

  • plan a community project

  • create an app

  • make sense of a pile of documents

  • work out why something keeps going wrong

You do not need to know exactly how to do any of those things.

That is rather the point.

Bring It the Mess

People often assume they need a perfect prompt.

They do not.

You can bring AI:

  • rough notes

  • screenshots

  • error messages

  • half-formed ideas

  • contradictory information

  • badly organised research

  • a sentence beginning with “I have no idea what I’m doing, but…”

AI is very good at turning mess into structure.

You can say:

“Here is everything I know. Help me work out what matters.”

Or:

“I have an idea, but I do not know whether it is practical.”

Or:

“This keeps happening. Help me identify the likely cause.”

It can help separate facts from assumptions, group related information, find gaps and suggest the next useful step.

That is much more useful than opening 43 browser tabs and eventually forgetting why you started.

Use It to Investigate

You can use AI to realise your secret desire to be Batman or Miss Marple, investigating unsolved mysteries 'till your heart's content. You can use it to investigate a new business idea or to understand something you always wondered about. 

The same techniques apply to almost anything.

Ask AI to:

  • find a manual for your old vacuum cleaner and figure out why it's shutting itself off

  • learn to solder and fix that old guitar that's been on the wall for 17 years (this one might be personal...)

  • build a timeline from a host of documents or emails

  • compare different accounts in your banking statement history

  • identify contradictions in texts or conversations

  • identify a person wanted for questioning from a photo on the news (... maybe be careful with this one!)

  • trace claims back to their original source

  • distinguish evidence from speculation

  • suggest what information is missing

  • propose several explanations and play devil's advocate

  • rank next steps by effort and value

This works just as well for a strange bank charge, a business problem, a broken appliance, a local history question or a project that has gone quietly sideways.

The method is the useful bit.

Make It Explain the Technical Parts

Most people tend to explain things in ways that they already understand, but if you're talking to someone who's trying to learn something you already know, they will likely get confused and lost. What's obvious to you is obvious because you already know it right? 

AI is a good teacher when you give it the context and delivery style you need and it doesn't judge. Tell it your level of current knowledge, how clever (or not) you think you are and then what you want it to explain. ELI5? No problem.

You can ask:

“Explain this without jargon.”

“Tell me what I actually need to do.”

“Guide me through this one step at a time.”

“Assume I am intelligent but new to this.”

This is useful for websites, software, spreadsheets, home networks, online security, phone settings, data, automation and AI itself.

You do not need to master the whole subject before starting.

You can learn the next useful thing while working on a real problem.

Use It to Build Things

This is where AI becomes more than a clever answer machine.

You can ask it to help you create:

  • a new website for your online business

  • a household budget system

  • a booking form for your dog-walking service

  • a research database (I can see you sleuths already working on this)

  • a family archive and auto-generated family tree

  • that new web app idea you've been thinking about for years

  • an automated email process

  • a project plan

  • a marketing campaign

  • a learning programme - get it to teach you to sing or speak Chinese - or sing in Chinese!

The important shift is that you can begin with the outcome.

For example:

“I want a simple way to track household spending and find waste.”

You do not need to know whether the answer is a spreadsheet, an app or something else.

AI can help you choose the approach, design it and build the first version.

It may still occasionally produce something daft. Computers remain committed to keeping us humble.

Use It to Challenge You

AI is not most useful when it agrees with you.

It is most useful when it improves your thinking.


Ask:

“What am I assuming?”

“Why might this fail?”

“Is this the best way to solve this problem?”

“Why might this fail?”

“What evidence would prove me wrong?”

“Give me three less obvious explanations.”

“What would an expert notice that I have missed?”

“What is the cheapest way to test this idea?”

You can also ask it to review the same problem from different angles:

  • practical

  • financial

  • technical

  • legal

  • ethical

  • customer-focused

This helps you avoid becoming dangerously attached to the first clever idea you had after lunch.

Use It to Generate Options

We often come to AI with an idea of what we think we need and the AI will happily give you what you ask it for, but we often don't know what we don't know, and we might be better off just explaining what outcome we want and letting the AI tell us how to get there. We also generally focus on one option alone, because it's the best one we could think of but the AI has a lot more information than we do.

Ask it for options:

  • a cheap option

  • a simple option

  • an ambitious option

  • a version you can do alone

  • a version that could become a business

  • a temporary fix

  • a long-term solution

Then ask it to compare them against your actual constraints.

This is especially useful when you feel stuck.

You may not need a better answer.

You may need more possible answers.

Use It as a Tutor

AI can teach you in the context of something you care about.

Instead of asking:

“Teach me coding.”

Try:

“Help me build a small tool, and teach me what I need as we go.”

Instead of:

“Explain marketing.”

Try:

“Help me promote this service, and explain each decision.”

Instead of:

“Teach me research skills.”

Try:

“Help me investigate this historical question properly.”

Learning becomes much easier when it is attached to a real objective.

You are not studying an entire field.

You are learning the next thing required to keep moving.

Keep It Grounded

AI can be brilliant.

It can also be confidently wrong, rather like yer man down the local pub who has read half an article and now has strong views on monetary policy and the war in Ukraine.

So:

  • check important facts

  • protect private information

  • do not treat guesses as evidence

  • be careful with legal, financial and medical decisions

  • ask where claims came from

  • make it explain uncertain conclusions

The aim is not to hand over your judgement.

It is to give your judgement better support.

The Real Opportunity

The exciting thing about AI is not that it can answer questions.

We already had search engines.

The exciting thing is that ordinary people now have access to something like a personal researcher, analyst, teacher and technical assistant.

You can bring it a vague goal, a messy problem or an idea that would once have seemed beyond you.

Then ask it to help you:

  1. understand the problem

  2. organise what you know

  3. find what is missing

  4. generate options

  5. test your assumptions

  6. build something useful

  7. decide what to do next

The nerdy genius in the back room is no longer reserved for detectives, billionaires and people with implausibly dramatic office lighting.

You have one too.

The trick is to stop asking only what it knows.

Start asking what the two of you can do together and what it can teach you to do for yourself.
